Bilateral relations between
the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Iraq
On the 2nd of January 1992, the Republic of Iraq recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Iraq were established on the 30th of March 1992. In 1992, the level of the Iraqi diplomatic mission in Baku was raised from the level of consulate general to the level of embassy. In October 2016, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened in Baghdad.
Historically friendly relations exist between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Iraq. Over the past years a successful political dialogue has been established with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. As a result, Azerbaijani-Iraqi relations are developing in political, economic, cultural and other fields and active contacts are established to discover new opportunities. Both on a bilateral basis and within international platforms, the Republic of Iraq has always supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
